Torrijas (Fried slices of bread soaked in wine)

       Traditional dessert of Lent and Week Easter. I love torrijas!!

4-6 servings

  • 8-12 loaf pan thick slices (the thicker it is, the better)
  • 2 cups moscatel wine
  • lemon rind
  • 5 oz sugar
  • 2 eggs
  • cinnamon stick
  • 1 cup honey
  • 3/4 cup water


  • In a large saucepan, put the wine, the cinnamon stick, the lemon rind and the sugar.
  • bring to a boil and simmer for 10 minutes
  • Remove the cinnamon and the lemon rind. Then let cool down until warm
  • When warm, add the bread, soak well and set aside.
  • Beat the eggs and dip the bread in the eggs for both sides.
  • Add oil to a pan fry the bread until slightly browned
  • let it cool down
  • To a sauceoan, Add the honey and the water. Then stir and bring to a boil.
  • Dip the bread in the honey while it is simmering
  • let cool down until it reaches room temperature.
  • serve
